Description
The Stephen B. Luce Library is a hub for student
success, academic growth, and community engagement. Our library faculty support
students by providing high-quality resources and services, fostering
student-centered learning environments, advancing information literacy, and
delivering educational and cultural programming that inspires intellectual
curiosity and creativity.
Library at Sea
During Summer Sea Term, two faculty librarians embark on the TSESVII to provide research assistance, access
to digital resources, and support for license exam preparation. They also
organize engaging programming onboard, such as movie nights, game nights,
painting sessions, and origami workshops. The Ship's Library offers an
abundance of pleasure reading, DVDs, board games, and license materials. The
Ship's Librarian ensures continuity of student-driven learning and reinforces
the Luce Library’s role as a supportive, inclusive academic partner, no matter
where our students are in the world!
Student Assistants
The Stephen B. Luce Library provides a workforce development opportunity for Maritime College students. Student assistants learn hands-on operations and customer service skills. Students also develop competencies in effective communication, time management, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Archives
The Archives at the Stephen B. Luce Library play a crucial role in preserving not only the rich institutional history of Maritime College but also the broader, often untold history of the maritime industry. Through preservation of special collections, such as the Sailors' Snug Harbor Collection and the Marine Society of the City of New York Collection, the Archives serve as a valuable resource for understanding the history, heritage, and impact of maritime culture.
